Autoplay Isn’t Your Friend

I spend a lot of time with YouTube running. Not much else to do. Anyone who’s used it extensively is well aware of the “Autoplay” function, which keeps the videos coming, claiming them from that little sidebar of recommended content.

That thing is evil. Based as it is in YouTube’s algorithms, designed to keep feeding you content that it thinks you watched, based on what you watched previously, it drops you down a rabbit hole. That whole thing with Matt Whatever It Is or whatever his name was and the “webcam from” “wormhole” drama followed by a fresh Adpocalypse showed that.

Now, to be fair, sometimes it does what I want. I slap on an ASMR video and pass out, usually YouTube does a good job of picking more soothing voices to hiss at me all night. I pick a Markiplier or Mista GG video, it funnels more weird games or Chris Hansen commentary to me.

The problem comes when I’m already in a foul mood (when am I not, though?) and I watch something for information, but get focused on something else and let the app keep rolling just for the noise/company. Like watching a Blaire White video to see what the whole Jessica Yaniv thing is all about, then get sucked into two hours of hearing about this nutjob and what they’ve done (and are still doing) and how they get away with it. Or when I watch a Sargon of Akkad video to hear what his thoughts on electron processes are, but then somehow end up watching forty minutes of the Socialist Democrats conference, where they spend the whole time shrieking about “Points of Personal Privilege”and voting on how to vote so they can vote and voting if the vote counted and all the while they’re crying because people are clapping, or because someone said “you guys” instead of “fellow comrades” and someone else was triggered.

Yeah, autoplay is bad for my mental health. I wonder if I have a lawsuit of my own in there, somewhere. Probably not, since I’m not one of the cool kids with a Tumblr identity tag, but one can dream that this crap would do something useful for me instead of just increasing my rage factor.

Sorry. Today’s post is a little ranty and mostly pointless. I blame the mental state YouTube left me in yesterday and the assault of insects I suffered in the night.

Hope everyone’s weekend is going well. Until next time!

A Brief Trip To Happyland

I watch a lot of YouTube.

Like… a lot. My iPad is typically running YouTube any time I’m not streaming, recording, or playing a game where the sound is important. It serves as the voice to cure loneliness, like leaving a TV on for a cat or dog who’s home alone all day or running the radio overnight for a widower. The problem is, what YouTube is usually spewing at me isn’t all that great for my mental health.

There’s a bit of a divide, you see, between content that “tickles the almonds” as some YouTube commentators say, that provides news and updates, or that explains things in an intelligible matter, and content that isn’t damaging to my mental health.

I may wish to stay apprised of the Jessica/Johnathan Yaniv situation; that doesn’t mean I really should. It just makes me angry. I made the mistake of watching some footage from a Socialist Democrat conference and found myself looking for the sharps. Given my status as a straight, white, cis, somewhat conservative male in the PNW, it’s advisable to keep an eye on what Antifa may be up to, but every time I see a clip of them destroying property, sucker-punching people, or taking over traffic detail while the cops stare and do nothing, my paranoia increases.

As someone who’s already suffering from bipolar depression and mild schizophrenia, who’s essentially housebound and who’s primary socialization outside of watching YouTube, stalking Whisper, or Tweeting into emptiness is talking to a stuffed Springtrap toy or a deaf cat, this is not a good situation.

Thankfully, there are a few things on YouTube that are better. Things that manage to make me laugh, that bring up the spirits. I rounded a few up and put them in a public playlist. If you want to know some of the things that crack me up, check it out. If you have suggestions for other videos I should add to the list, things that have cheered you up or that you think are good, let me know. I’m very open to expanding the list.

Of special note on there is Olyve Gardyns. She’s a new YouTuber, who I was introduced to via Jeff Holiday (who I watch a lot of, but generally he’s in the topics that make me angry while educating me, so not much of him made it to the happiness list.) She makes some of my favorite stuff right now, so show her some support and drop her a like and a subscribe, willya? She deserves it.

In other news, I’ll probably be trying to stream Too Human a little later today, assuming my Xbox wants to behave and I can get it to talk to my laptop. It’s one of those games that everyone I know despises, but that I find amusing. If you want to keep up with me on the streaming front, you can do so via Twitch.

Lastly, and I know you’re all sick of hearing me babble about it, still trying to sort out surgery and keep a roof over my head. If you can help, consider dropping a share or a dime in the bucket over here at GoFundMe. If you’d prefer, you can also support my endeavors via Patreon. It’s always appreciated but never required.

Happy Hump Day, everyone. Now go watch some Olyve and AVGN and cheer the hell up. It’s what I plan to do.

This May Be Interesting… Or Not.

So, there isn’t much in the way of content for this post today. Sorry ’bout that. But that’s because we’re doing something a wee bit different.

Last night, I took some footage. I’ve mentioned before that I suspect this place may be haunted, and that my darling daughter Little Miss No Name occasionally moves – or seems to – on her own. So I left a spirit box app and my camera running while pointed at her. Just for funsies, I figured we’d review that footage together, over on YouTube.

If you’re of a mind, visit and subscribe to my channel – it’s kind of empty, I know – so you get the notifications and can join in when I go live (which should be around 10:45-11:00 AM on 8/5, Pacific Time? Trying to make OBS behave right now.) We can watch it together. And probably be bored to tears together, but hey, at least we can chat a bit and laugh at the stuff the spirit box spat out, right?

You can also stalk me over on Twitch if you like. I do game streams every once in a while, where you can watch me fail, and take requests for awful games you want to see someone struggle with, if that’s your thing.

Lastly, as everyone knows, health is not good and I could really use some help. If you can drop a dime in the bucket either on Patreon or GoFundMe, or even just share the links, it’d help a lot. If not, it’s okay and I understand. But thanks.

New Video: Speaking with the Spirits?

I got a new app a couple of days ago, and have been fiddling around with it; decided to share some of the results.

Have some other suggestions for me to potter about with, or something you’d like to see me try with this one? Let us know down below!

Gaming Whinging and Nintendo Rage

Nintendo has hurt me plenty over the years. Like most folks, my fascination with gaming was pretty solidly rooted in that old gray box (and the need to blow on cartridges with some form of voodoo ritual to make them behave), but in time I grew to loathe the people who gave me that initial pleasure… but they want me back.

Dreams of Omission

Referencing some of the things I brought up last week, about where ideas come from, I took a moment to provide some final thoughts and a question; when writing (or creating in general) something very personal or tied to things you haven’t discussed with others before, how much do you share? Are there parts that you leave out, censor, or otherwise alter?

Let us know down below, and if you’re of a mind and want to share a dream-based bit of art, feel free to drop a link while you’re at it!

Working on YouTube

As part of the campaign of renewal, and in an effort to put my shiny new camera to use, I’ve begun to prod the YouTube channel once again… splicing together a dramatic reading of Randolph’s Room right now, and have a couple of other bits of VO recorded that I need to set up images for.

In the meantime, you can see me trying not to drown in the forest!
