As Halloween looms (alongside Dia de los Muertos, All Saint’s Day, Samhain, etc, etc, etc) it’s the right season to talk about this sort of thing, I think.
So, do you believe in spooks? Goblins? Vampires? All things supernatural, ephemeral, paranormal and/or as yet unexplained?
I do. People mock me for it, or write it off as my mental illness working overtime, but I still think there’s… something, anyway, out there.
I call ’em spooks, because it’s a handy catch-all term – and includes things that are/were human beings or our friends before becoming metabolically-challenged, things that aren’t human and never were, things that were human and became something… else, and giant friggin’ question marks – but whatever you want to call ’em, I think it’s a genuine possibility.
I’m also a severe skeptic, which might seem like a contradiction. I’m not one of those people who thinks every time there’s a little circle in a picture that it must be a sign that great-grandma is watching. I don’t tag every shadow as an extraplanar entity that means me harm. I don’t think every nightmare is a warning or attack from things beyond the grave. I just believe it’s possible that some of those things might be possible.
That means I tend to hate both hardheaded “science-minded” folks who state it to be categorically impossible and the nutters who think everything is true and shout it to the heavens. I want more middle of the road folks, from both camps, to sit down and talk about it. I want some actual research. I think scientists could afford to have just a little credulity and poke the bear, and most “ghost hunters” could be more willing to accept the possibility that they aren’t seeing what they think they are.
I also sometimes hope that I’m wrong, that there are no such things as spooks of any flavor, and they eventually prove it’s all infrasound, pareidolia, and schizophrenia. It’d be kind of a relief, even if it takes the magic out of it all. It’s honestly more comforting to acknowledge my crazy is the source of the problem, and not that my swords, dolls, windows and walls are harboring things that want to hurt me.

Insomniac Nightmares 
I’ve an open mind. I’d like to believe! I am middle of the ground like you, I like to discuss things, see evidence, hear about things. Without a doubt there is more in this world than the material. I just think most people aren’t tapped into it. I like nature and symbology and to keep wonder alive in my mind.
I prefer magic to mundane so I am happy to hear about all kinds of stuff and have a mixed bunch of friends. I find real life waaaay scarier than any horror movie and way more mundane. So nice to ponder on mysteries and the fantastical, makes life more exciting. I would happily sleep in a Haunted House just to see if anything weird happened. Actually I wouldn’t mind having a Ghost to talk to. LOL 🙂
Going beyond ghosts and spooks, there is quantum physics, synchronicity, psychic ability, the power of focusing the mind through prayer, spells, mantras.. I mean quite simply we are all energy as well as flesh and blood. Our minds can create wonderful things but society programs and conditions us from birth. The older we get the more we try to struggle and lose these layers and become the individual that we were meant to be.
I have met Goblin looking men though lacking in Supernatural powers, ha, ha and been spooked many times by humans! I do hope to meet a Vampire so I can interview him, 🙂 Preferably this Halloween. Then live to tell the tale. 🙂 I’d say most people might have a strange tale to tell of the ghostly ilk. Maybe you do… 🙂
Most of the people I know are fairly intrigued by this kind of stuff but not avid believers just pretty laid back and open minded. It’s an interesting topic to consider. Sure the books that captivated people in childhood often had this quality. Magic moves the world, takes us out of ourselves. Books and films like The Wizard of Oz, which has it’s roots in Theosophy are timeless, loved by all.
L. Frank Baum, the author of the Wizard of Oz was a member of the Theosophical Society, which was an organisation based on occult research and the comparative study of religions. He had a deep understanding of Theosophy and, consciously or not, created an allegory of Theosophic teachings when he wrote the Wizard of Oz.
Modern humans are very cut off from nature and ancient teachings and civilisations. Yet there is a lot to be learnt there to literally make life more enjoyable and liveable and to tap into your limitless potential. Would I prefer to sit in an office or go off on a trip to an ancient mysterious site and do some research, give me the latter. I’m a Believer! In something… intangible, yet possible. Life is a Mystery as Madonna would say, and none of us have it sussed! 😉
